These two girls sit on the wharf, waiting for a boat to take them across. The boat travels across with the boatman holding on to a rope that connects the island with the mainland. This small village in Sothikuppam, Cuddalore, is an island that rests between a river and the sea. On the day of the tsunami, the children playing on the beach ran towards the wharf as they saw the waters rise. They did not anticipate that the waters of the river also will swell. 23 children and one woman died in the incident. These kids, mercifully escaped.
